ndresen is anything but a well-known name for classic Porto lovers. It is a traditional family house that is miles away from the commercial harbour houses that you can find in every corner of the world. The port of Andresen is in the top 5 of the most renowned port houses where quality prevails. In 1826, Jan Heinrich Andresen, son of Thomas Andresen and Thurke Peppen, was born on the island of Föhr, part of the German North Frisian Wadden islands. At the age of 14 he boarded a small ship to go to America, but when he arrived in Porto he decided to stay there and started working as an apprentice port trader. In 1845, Jann Hallett Andresen founded the JH Andresen port house at the age of 19. Andresen showed an amazing ability to work and thanks to his enterprising character he amassed a fortune and gained respect in the community. Over time he became president of the Porto Trade Association. He died in Lisbon in 1894. In 1942 JH Andresen's heirs faced an economic crisis. They decided to sell the business to Albino Pereira dos Santos, already a respected name in the Port wine industry. Since 1962, his son Mário Ruy Flores dos Santos manages the day-to-day management. He continues the family tradition to the present day, faithful to the house. The company remains one of the few fully family-owned Portuguese port companies. All the house's port wines are now produced in Quinta das Aranhas on the Tua River, in the heart of the Douro. The conservation takes place as prescribed by law in Vila Nova di Gaia. The 40 hectares of vineyards are of the highest quality (class A). Visiting this quality house is impossible, as you can only enter by appointment. Once invited, you will find yourself in a 19th century atmosphere and hear the whisper of passion as Andresen takes everything to the next level!
